As soon as he got home, Kevin changed his clothes and went out for a run. He had promised his father he would try to keep to a regular routine and build up his endurance.

“It’s okay that you’re not into sports, but everyone needs to get some sort of exercise to stay healthy,” Colonel Keller told him. “And the best part about running is, you can do it anywhere and you’ve always got all the equipment you need with you right there at the end of your legs.”

He had to admit he really didn’t mind it so much. He was able to run at his own pace, and while the first couple of times he went out on his own he listened to music on his MP3 player, he had forgotten to charge it the next time and discovered that he actually preferred running without it. The peace and quiet gave him a chance to think, and with his mind able to wander, he didn’t focus on the running, which allowed him to go even farther.

On this run, he had plenty of thoughts to distract him.

He wasn’t angry at Sammie, but he couldn’t point to what it was that had made him so mad. There was no doubt in his mind that he and Timmy were friends. He had a lot of things in common with the tall, handsome boy, from comics to music to favorite TV programs. Whenever they hung out, they had plenty to talk about and Timmy obviously respected his opinions. Wasn’t he always asking Kevin for recommendations of comics he should read?

So what if the swimmer had another group of friends who didn’t overlap with the Geek Squad? Maybe it was just that the rest of them weren’t as nice as Timmy. True, it was a small number of kids, like Elliot and his pals, who actually went out of their way to be cruel, but the majority just ignored kids like Kevin and Nicky, and that was almost as hurtful as the bullying. Maybe Timmy didn’t include them in all parts of his life, but who said he had to?

Kevin felt a lot better by the time he was nearing the end of his run. He still didn’t quite understand where Sammie was coming from, but he decided he’d just have to chalk it up as a “girl thing.” He had heard his mother say more than once that “men are from Mars, and women are from Venus,” and while he wasn’t sure he understood exactly what that meant, he got that it had something to do with the way the opposite sexes thought and reacted to things. Anyway, just because Sammie had a problem with Timmy didn’t mean Kevin had to agree with her.

He was still a couple of blocks from home when he passed Becky Sherman’s house on Eden Drive. Becky was in Gail Rollins’s clique and was a cheer-squad star who always seemed to travel in a pack with the other popular girls, more often than not trailed by boys from the different teams.
